Pharmaceutical intermediates are intermediate chemicals made in the process of chemical synthesis, which belong to fine chemical products. Pharmaceutical intermediates can be divided into antibiotic drug intermediates, antipyretic and analgesic medicinal intermediates, cardiovascular system medicinal intermediates, anti-cancer medicinal intermediates and other large categories according to application fields. The upstream industry of pharmaceutical intermediates is the manufacturing of basic chemical raw materials, and the downstream industry is the manufacturing of chemical drug apis and preparations. The pharmaceutical intermediate industry after more than 30 years of steady development in our country, the chemical raw materials and intermediates needed for the pharmaceutical production in our country can be matched basically, only a few high-end intermediates with complex synthesis technology need to be satisfied through the import. Moreover, because our country is rich in resources and the price of raw materials is lower, there are many intermediates realize a large number of exports now. In recent years, the output of Chinese pharmaceutical intermediates fluctuated greatly. During 2010-2012, the output of Chinese pharmaceutical intermediates declined continuously, while during 2012-2015, the output of Chinese chemical pharmaceutical intermediates increased from 51.200 tons to 676,400 tons. According to the output of major Chinese intermediates in 2016, except for erythromycin thiocyanate, D-7ACA, ceftriaxone coarse salt, levophosphodextrine salt, cefuroxime acid and cefazolinic acid, the output of other antibiotic intermediates decreased to varying degrees in 2016. According to the data of Market Research and Investment Forecast Analysis Report of China Pharmaceutical Intermediates Industry (2018-2023) issued by the Forward Industry Research Institute, the production of penicillin industrial salt decreased by 10.1% year-on-year, and the supply and export volume decreased by 9.6% year-on-year.
The output of the seven production enterprises increased year-on-year, except for Shiyao and Yili Twinings Biological production, and the output of Sinopsin Group Viqida Pharmaceutical was flat with the same period. The other four all saw output fall, the smallest by more than 28 per cent. The development of pharmaceutical intermediates industry is significantly influenced by the development of downstream chemical apis and chemical pharmaceutical preparations.
From the perspective of the development of chemical raw materials and chemical pharmaceutical preparations, the manufacturing industry of chemical raw materials and chemical pharmaceutical preparations has shown a consistent and steady development trend in recent years. In 2017, the market size of China’s chemical API and chemical required drug preparation industry reached 51.0806 billion yuan and 765.795 billion yuan respectively. Based on the analysis of various factors affecting the development of Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, it can be seen that Chinese chemical API and pharmaceutical preparation industry will maintain a growing trend in the next few years. And the downstream drug market is promising, will promote the upstream pharmaceutical intermediates to strengthen.
